Public Education Series: Focusing on Youth
When: Wednesday, Feb 16, 2012
The first in the series will be a presentation about the Child Behavioral Health Inititative (CBHI) Wrap-Around program. CBHI is an interagency undertaking by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services and MassHealth. Its mission is to strengthen, expand and integrate Behavioral Health Services for enrollees under the age of 21. The Wrap-Around program is a comprehensive system of community-based, culturally competent care that aims to coordinate and improve the interface of services to seriously emotionally disturbed children and their families. Brien Center employee, Suzanne Thomson, will give the presentation followed by a Q&A period. Afterwards, the Berkshire Coalition will report on the Youth Suicide Prevention Project past and present strategy to decrease the risk of youth suicides in Berkshire County.

FOCUS ON RECOVERY NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, will present In Our Own Voice. Two trained speakers; Laurel Landon and Amy Alexander will share their own compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. A critical component of NAMI’s mission is to educate the community about mental illness in a way that reduces the shame, isolation, and stigma that often prevent a person from seeking effective treatment for their illness. FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Marcia Lawrence is the author of Menopause and Madness: The Truth about Estrogen and the Mind. She shares the fascinating story of her own experience with psychosis during perimenopause, together with an extensive review of the research on the role of estrogen throughout the female life cycle. Marcia will speak about the connection between psychiatric illness and the hormonal changes that occur at puberty, postpartum, and during perimenopause/menopause. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Berkshire Coalition Public Education Series - Liz Friedman will talk about postpartum depression and its impact on the emotional and physical health of mothers and their families. Founder of the Postpartum Support Initiative, Liz will describe a community-based model developed by the MotherWoman organization, to insure that screening, education, and treatment are available to mothers throughout the Berkshires.

WHEN: OCTOBER Weekends 19, 20, 26 and 27, 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
WHERE: 190 Cleveland Road in Dalton, MA
TICKETS: $10 each, on sale at the Dalton Community Recreation Center or at the event.
Embark on a treacherous journey into the night where darkness becomes your worst enemy! While you are there, you will be donating to a great cause by supporting AFSP's programming for youth suicide prevention in Berkshire County. Battlemind: Successful Transition from the Combat-zone to the Home-zone
